👩‍🍳 Instructions
Activate the yeast:
In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of the sugar. Stir gently and let it sit for 5–10 minutes, until foamy.
Make the dough:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Add the egg, vanilla, softened butter, and activated yeast mixture.
Knead:
Mix until a soft dough forms. Knead for about 8–10 minutes, until the dough becomes smooth, soft, and slightly elastic. If the dough is extremely sticky, add a little flour, one tablespoon at a time.
First rise:
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl. Cover with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 1–1½ hours, or until doubled in size.
Shape the donuts:
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Roll it out to approximately ½ inch thick. Cut out circles and make a hole in the center of each one.
Second rise:
Place the shaped donuts on a lightly floured tray. Cover loosely and let them rise for another 30–45 minutes, until noticeably puffy.
Fry:
Heat vegetable oil to approximately 350°F (175°C). Carefully place the donuts into the hot oil. Fry for about 1–2 minutes per side, until golden brown.
Drain:
Remove the donuts with a slotted spoon and place them on a wire rack or paper towels to drain excess oil.
Make the glaze:
Whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Divide the glaze into bowls and add food coloring if desired.
Decorate:
Dip the cooled donuts into the glaze. Immediately add sprinkles, chopped nuts, coconut, or chocolate. Let the glaze set for a few minutes.
