Is cremation a sin according to the Bible?
This is a question many Christians have wondered about, but the Bible does not contain a direct command saying that cremation is forbidden.
Throughout Scripture, burial is the most commonly described practice. For example, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and many other biblical figures are described as being buried.
But there is also an important example involving Saul and his sons. After they died in battle, the men of Jabesh-gilead took their bodies, burned them, and then buried their bones. (1 Samuel 31:11–13)
So, what can we conclude?
The Bible emphasizes respect for the dead and the hope of resurrection, rather than establishing a universal rule that a person’s body must be buried.
For Christians who are considering cremation, the decision may therefore involve personal conviction, cultural tradition, and the beliefs of their church. Some Christian traditions prefer burial because of its historical symbolism, while others permit cremation.
👉 The bigger biblical message is not how the body is laid to rest, but the hope of resurrection and eternal life.
