Ingredients:
8 slices of white sandwich bread
8 slices of ham
2 cups (200 g) shredded mozzarella or Gruyère cheese
3 tablespoons butter, softened
For the Creamy Sauce:
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup (240 ml) milk
½ cup (50 g) shredded cheese
½ teaspoon garlic powder
¼ teaspoon black pepper
¼ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon dried parsley or Italian seasoning
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
Make the creamy sauce: melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute.
Gradually add the milk while whisking until smooth and slightly thickened.
Stir in the shredded cheese, garlic powder, black pepper, and salt. Cook until creamy and smooth.
Spread a thin layer of butter on the bread slices.
Place ham and shredded cheese between two slices of bread to make the sandwiches.
Arrange the sandwiches on a parchment-lined baking tray.
Spread a generous layer of the creamy cheese sauce over the top of each sandwich.
Sprinkle with a little extra shredded cheese and dried parsley.
Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden brown.
For an extra crispy top, broil for 1–2 minutes, watching carefully.
Let cool for a couple of minutes, then serve warm.
